We train students to be in an industry where medical personnel are in demand. The Medical Assistant Program is a 9 month course. It includes 200 hours of externship of which upon completion you may sit for the national certification. The Professional Medical Coder Program concentrates on the specific skills and knowledge needed to be a coder for physicians and hospitals. Courses are held 3 times a year. Students completing the Professional Medical Coding Program may sit for the national certification exam.

How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
James Takemoto, born and raised from the big island, served in WW2 as a Japanese interpreter and in combat. He then trained as a medical technologist and has many years in allied health at VA hospitals in the contiguous states. He decided to return and began teaching. Med-Assist School of Hawaii is his and Mrs. Keiko Takemoto's legacy to his roots of a Hawaii native born Japanese.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Locally owned from a man who contributed so much to his country and to the people of Hawaii.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one location, 33 S. King Street; and are looking at the possibility of relocating and offering diverse teaching methods.
What type of payments do you accept?
We are eligible to assist Veteran's, GI Montgomery Bill, MyCAA, Federal Financial Aid student loans including Pell Grants and FSEOG (Federal Supplementary Educational Opportunity Grant). Med-Assists offers Institutional Grants as well as other third party payors; i.e., insurance companies, Oahu WorkLinks, Vocational Rehab. Other forms of payments can be made in cash, check, MasterCard and Visa.

Classes are held: 8-5 pm (Monday - Thursday)
Evening classes: 5-9:35 p.m. (Monday - Thursday)
Student Open Lab: 8-5 pm (Friday)
