Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Go Bananas has been in business since November 1987
What is your primary product or service?
We are the largest distributor of kayaks, roof racks and truck racks in Hawaii. We specialize in outfitting kayaks for fishing, freediving, scuba diving, camping, surfing, and sailing. We have car racks and truck racks for almost any vehicle. Our racks are used to haul lumber, kayaks, surfboards, outriggers, and anything to large to fit in your car or truck. We also feature a large assortment of equipment for SUP paddling, outrigger paddling, paddling apparel, backpacking and camping equipment.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I started working at Go Bananas as a manager in February 1989. This was just after the first plastic sit-on-top kayaks first came out. I was the primary R&D guy finding and developing as many uses for these kayaks as I could. Our expertise in this new field quickly made us the top kayak dealership in the state. We export our kayaks to all of the outer islands and throughout the South Pacific. Our quality of outfitting kayaks even has our loyal customers shipping kayaks back to the mainland.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We have been avid fans of sit-on-top kayaks for 20 years and we have developed better equipment and installations than any dealership in the state. In order to carry kayaks and surfboards on our cars and trucks we have became equally adept at roof racks and truck racks and we have pioneered and helped develop that industry as well.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have two stores on Oahu. Our primary location is on Kapahulu Avenue and Winam street. Our second location is at 98-390 Kam Hwy. on the East end of Kamehameha Highway next to Dixie Grill. No expansion is planned at this time.
Provide detailed directions to your location
The Kapahulu location is one mile mauka (towards the mountains) of Kalakaua Avenue which is the main street through Waikiki. We are also 4/10 of a mile makai (towards the ocean) from King street. Our Pearl City location is the first driveway on the right after entering Kamehameha Hwy from the H1 exit coming from the Honolulu direction.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept almost all forms of payment.
Which areas do you service?
We sell our products throughout the state of Hawaii.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
John Enomoto
What are your hours of operation?
9 am to 7 pm daily for both stores.
